Description

The VMOD-40 is a MC68xx040-based embedded high-performance VMEbus microcomputer offering

modular flexibility for customer specific applications. With the modularity of the mezzanine I/O bus

concept MODULbus, it covers all customer requests, -from small budget intelligent I/O systems to

specific operating system processors with multiple serial interfaces and SCSI connection.

On one double Eurocard the high-power MC68040 Microprocessor supervises 3 (7) plug-in sockets for

digital I/O-, analog I/O-, motorcontroller-... modules, well known from the successful MODULbus

concept.

If used as intelligent I/O system the local intelligence of the VMOD-40 frees the host CPU from module

control operations and speeds up the transfer rate of module data.

The VMOD-40 is also designed to operate as a powerful operating system CPU equipped with SCSI

mass storage controller in real time control and data logging applications.

The standard version of the VMOD-40 is provided with 1 MByte of DRAM, which is completely dual

ported to the processor and to the VMEbus.

A battery backup circuit prevents the RTC and on-chip 2KB SRAM from data loss during power failure.

A JEDEC socket for an 8Bit EPROM offers a maximum size of 1MByte for firmware and/or operating

system memory for the MC68040 CPU.

Two serial interfaces (RS232) are available on the front panel sub-D connector and can be used as

console port or data transfer lines.

The VMOD-40 is equipped with the versatile VMEbus interface/buscontroller chip VIC068, providing a

standard master/slave/system controller interface in accordance with the VMEbus specifications. The

board is online software-configurable to A16, A24 and A32 address bus width mode with D08, D16

and D32(D64) data transfer capability. In slave or master mode the VMOD-40 can generate or handle

any of the seven interrupt requests inclusive vector processing. As with buswidth, all features of the

interrupt system are online software-configurable.

The default monitor program running on the VMOD-40 provides download and start mechanisms for

module tasks. Their evaluation can take place in high level language on a UNIX, VxWorks, OS-9 or

other development system.

The VMOD-40 environment is supported with OS-9, VxWorks and pSOS+ as powerful real time

operating systems.
